The Awareness Lab is founded and directed by Jesse R. Fleming.
Originally established by Fleming as an academic research and creative studio within the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln—where he served as an Associate Professor—the Lab evolved in 2025 into an independent immersive experience and contemplative design studio in the North San Francisco Bay Area.
Situated at the intersection of San Francisco’s cultural legacy of expanded consciousness and Silicon Valley’s engine of technological innovation, the Lab explores a hybridized approach to contemplative technology. Its location in a low-tech, non–human-dominant environment is an intentional choice, orienting the work toward sensitivity, ecological attunement, and the emerging movement of more-than-human design—supporting healing through deep immersion in the natural world.
